Website down on Hostinger: what to check in hPanel first

Hostinger hosts a large share of first websites, and its panel, hPanel, keeps the tools in different places from cPanel. Most "site down" cases there come down to four causes: a PHP change, a plugin or theme, a plan or domain that lapsed, or the limits of a shared plan. Each leaves a different sign, and all of them can be read from hPanel before anyone touches the site.

Rule out the account first

  • A lapsed plan or an expired domain shows on the hPanel home page before you open anything else. An expired domain usually shows a parking page instead of your site, which is a different problem from a server error.
  • If the domain is registered elsewhere, check that it still points at Hostinger. A nameserver change at the registrar takes a site down without any error in hPanel.
  • Hostinger publishes a status page for its own outages. If it reports an incident for your server, nothing on your side is broken.

Read the error, not the page

  • A blank white page or a 500 is PHP: a version that is too new for a plugin or theme, a fatal error in one of them, or a bad .htaccess rule.
  • A 403 is permissions or a rule in .htaccess, sometimes left by a security plugin.
  • A 503 or a page that loads very slowly is usually the plan hitting its CPU, memory or process limits. The site comes back when the load drops, and goes away again under traffic.
  • "Error establishing a database connection" is the database password or host in the site's configuration file, or a database that was removed or renamed.

Where things live in hPanel

  • Websites, then Manage, opens the dashboard for one site. Everything below is in its left-hand menu.
  • PHP Configuration, under Advanced, sets the PHP version and the display_errors switch. Turn on error logging there and the log appears in a .logs folder in File Manager from that moment on; nothing earlier is recorded.
  • File Manager, under Files, opens public_html, where .htaccess and the site's configuration file live. Renaming the plugins folder of a WordPress site here is the fastest way to tell whether a plugin is the cause.
  • Backups, under Files, lists the copies Hostinger keeps. Most plans keep weekly copies and the higher ones daily. You can download a copy or restore files and the database from there.
  • SSH Access, under Advanced, is where SSH is turned on for the plans that include it.

Fixes you can try in ten minutes

  • Switch the PHP version back one step in PHP Configuration and reload. If the site returns, a plugin or theme is not ready for the newer version.
  • Rename the plugins folder in File Manager. If the site returns, rename it back and disable plugins one by one.
  • Restore yesterday's backup if the site broke after an update you made. Check first that nothing has been added since, such as orders or sign-ups.
  • Check the disk and inode usage shown on the hPanel dashboard. A full account breaks uploads, caches and sometimes the database.

When to hand it to us

Hand it to us when the ten-minute fixes did not work, when the error changes each time you look, when a backup restore made it worse, or when you cannot get into hPanel at all. The fix has a fixed price and a same-day promise, on Hostinger as on any host. Hostinger lets you share one website with another Hostinger account under Account sharing, which is how we get in without your password; on plans with SSH, our per-job key works too, and everything we change is logged on your job page.

Questions people ask

Is Hostinger down, or is it my site?
Check Hostinger's status page and then the free site check on our home page, which looks at your site from outside. If the status page is clear and the check shows an error, it is your site.
Will Hostinger support fix it for me?
Their support answers questions about the hosting, not about your site's code or plugins. For a broken plugin, a bad update or a hack, the fix is on your side of the line, which is what we do.
Does the fix cost extra on Hostinger?
No. The price on the service page is the same on every host, and nothing is charged until you approve the fix.
