Transfer a website to another hosting company

People say "transfer my website" and mean three different things that often live at the same company: the hosting that serves the site, the registration of the domain name, and the mailboxes. You can move any one of them without the others. Knowing which ones you are moving is most of the planning.

Three things that only look like one

  • Hosting: the server where the site's files and database live. This is what a "website transfer" moves.
  • The domain: registered with a registrar, which may or may not be your host. The domain can stay where it is; only its DNS record changes to point at the new server.
  • Email: mailboxes for your domain. If they are at the old host, they must move or be replaced before that account closes.

Before you cancel anything

  • Find out where the domain is registered. A WHOIS lookup shows the registrar. If it is the old host, do not close that account until the domain is transferred out or its nameservers point elsewhere.
  • Find out where email lives. Look at the MX records for your domain; if they point at the old host, plan the mailbox move first.
  • Download a full backup from the old host and keep it somewhere that is not the old host.
  • Note the PHP version and any special settings; the new host should match them on day one.

The transfer in order

  • Set up the new hosting account and copy the site there.
  • Test the copy on the new host before anyone else sees it.
  • Move or re-point email if it lives at the old host.
  • Point the domain's DNS at the new host and issue the SSL certificate.
  • Keep paying the old host until traffic and email have fully moved, then cancel.

Common surprises

  • The domain was a free gift from the old host and is registered in their name or locked to their account.
  • The old host holds the DNS zone, so cancelling hosting also deletes the records that keep email working.
  • Annual plans are rarely refunded mid-term; moving early means paying twice for a while.
  • A site built with the old host's own site builder cannot be exported as a normal website at all.

Questions people ask

Do I have to transfer my domain too?
No. Leaving the domain where it is and changing its DNS is simpler and avoids the transfer lock period. Transfer it later if you want everything in one place.
Will I lose my email?
Only if the mailboxes are at the old host and nobody moves them. We check the MX records at the start of every move so this is planned, not discovered.
How long does it take?
The copy and test take hours. DNS propagation takes minutes to a day depending on the old time-to-live. Our promise for the whole move is two days.
Can you transfer a site from a host that has locked me out?
Sometimes, from your last backup or from what is still reachable publicly. Tell us the situation in the request and we will say what is possible before anything is charged.
