What we can fix on a Shopify store, and what only Shopify can
A Shopify store has no server of its own, which is the point of Shopify. It also means that when something breaks, the first question is whose side of the line it is on. Shopify's side is their servers, the checkout and payments. Your side is the theme, the apps, the domain, the email records and the forms, and that is where most problems live.
Only Shopify can fix
- An outage of Shopify itself. Their status page says so, and nothing on your side helps.
- The checkout flow and payment processing, including Shopify Payments holds and payouts.
- Anything inside Shopify's admin that is not a setting you can change yourself.
Theme and app problems
- A theme update, or a snippet someone pasted, broke the layout, a section or the mobile menu.
- An app you uninstalled left code behind in the theme, slowing every page or breaking one.
- Too many app scripts, so the store scores badly on Shopify's own speed report and feels slow on phones.
- We work through a staff or collaborator account limited to the online store and apps, which you revoke when the job closes, and every change is listed in the report.
Store email landing in spam
- Order confirmations and marketing mail go out under your domain only after Shopify's sender records are added at your DNS. Until then they go out on Shopify's behalf and land in Promotions or spam.
- The records live where your domain's DNS is, at the registrar or at Cloudflare, not in Shopify, which is why they are so often missing.
- This is the emails-going-to-spam fix at the same price, with a test from Gmail and Outlook at the end.
Domain and DNS
- A domain that will not connect usually has the wrong records, or old ones left over from the previous site. Shopify shows the exact records it expects on its domain page.
- A domain behind Cloudflare has to be set to DNS only for the Shopify records, or the certificate never issues and the store shows a security warning.
- Moving DNS to connect the store is where mail records get lost, and the mail stops the same day.
Bot sign-ups and junk traffic
- Fake customer accounts and newsletter sign-ups come through forms that bypass Shopify's built-in spam protection, usually from an app or a custom form.
- The fix is turning Shopify's own protection on for every form and removing the forms that skip it. Card-testing on the checkout is filtered by Shopify, not by anything we can add.
When to hand it to us
If the problem is on your side of the line, the fixed price applies and the hold works the same way. If it is on Shopify's side, we say so for free and point you at the right place, which is usually their status page or their support.
Questions people ask
- Can you make my Shopify store faster?
- The theme and the apps, yes, and Shopify's own speed report shows the before and after. Shopify's servers are not ours to tune, and the speed fix on a store means your theme and apps.
- Do I give you my Shopify password?
- No. You add a staff or collaborator account with the permissions the job needs and remove it at the end. Passwords are never asked for.
- Can you change the checkout?
- No. The checkout is Shopify's, and what can be customized depends on your plan. We can tell you what is possible, which is sometimes less than an agency promised.
